Promoter holding: what it means and how to read it
What is Promoter holding?
The share of the company owned by its founders or controlling group, the promoters.
Promoters are the founders or the controlling group of an Indian listed company. Their holding shows how much of the company the people running it own. A meaningful stake ties their wealth to the share price, which is the 'skin in the game' investors look for.
The direction matters as much as the level. Promoters buying more is usually read as confidence; steady selling deserves a question. SEBI caps the promoter group at 75%, so that at least a quarter of every listed company is in public hands.
How it is calculated
A worked example
Why does Promoter holding matter?
Owners with a big stake have their own money on the line.
What is a good Promoter holding?
A high holding is often seen as positive. SEBI requires at least 25% to be held by the public.
There is no right number. Many well-run companies are professionally managed with little or no promoter holding. What to check is the trend over several quarters and, above all, how much of the holding is pledged as collateral for loans: a large pledge can force selling if the price falls.
