Loan growth: what it means and how to read it
What is Loan growth?
How much a lender's loan book grew over the latest fiscal year.
A lender taking share from its rivals grows faster than the system, and that is how the best franchises are built. But lending is the one business where sales are easy and the cost arrives later: any lender can grow by saying yes to borrowers others refused.
Loans made in a rush tend to sour two or three years on. So fast growth should be read together with where it came from, which segments and which kind of borrower, and with what gross NPA and credit cost do in the years after.

Why does Loan growth matter?
Loans are what a lender sells. Growth in them drives growth in income, as long as the new loans are good ones.
What is a good Loan growth?
Compare it with the banking system, which usually grows 10% to 15% a year. Growing much faster than that for long is a risk as well as an achievement.
Steady growth a few points above the system, with stable asset quality, is the pattern of a strong lender. Growth far above 25% a year for several years has often been followed by a jump in bad loans.
